LOVE, LOVE!! Beautiful! I've purchased several earrings from Ravelle and all of them are unique, high-quality, and lightweight. These are no exception. I've been looking for monstera leaf earrings for a while, and was so pysched to find these in Ravelle's shop! Turnaround and shipping are also typically faster than the posted time-frame, which is a bonus. :)

New Mexico Magazine

Seeing my name in print for the first time in a magazine was an exhilarating and surreal experience. As I flipped through the glossy pages, my heart raced at the sight of my article, penned by Maria Manuela, who had spent two hours interviewing me about my life story. Sharing my past with a talented writer ignited a newfound spark within me and revealed a sense of vulnerability I hadn’t anticipated. This moment not only marked a significant milestone in my artistic journey but also instilled a sense of confidence that I would carry into my future endeavors. The joy of seeing my jewelry published, to be seen by many, affirmed I was on the right path in life, reminding me of the power of storytelling, connection, and art.

What is enameling?

Enameling is the process of fusing powdered glass to a substrate (usually metal) by heating it to a high temperature, creating a smooth, durable, and often brightly colored surface. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of the enameling process:

1. Surface Preparation

  • Cleaning the metal: The metal surface (commonly copper, silver, or gold) must be completely clean to ensure the enamel adheres properly. This involves:

    • Removing grease or oils (using degreasers or acid baths).

    • Sanding or abrasive blasting to create a slightly rough surface.

2. Applying the Enamel

  • Enamel powder: Made of finely ground glass, often mixed with metal oxides for color.

  • Methods of application:

    • Dry sifting: Sprinkling dry enamel powder over the surface.

    • Wet packing: Applying enamel mixed with water or a binder using a brush or spatula.

    • Spraying or dipping: For even coatings, especially on 3D surfaces.

3. Firing

  • The enameled piece is placed in a kiln heated between 1400–1650°F (760–900°C).

  • The enamel melts and fuses to the metal surface.

  • Firing times are usually short—1–3 minutes, depending on the thickness and type of enamel.

4. Cooling

  • After firing, the piece is removed from the kiln and allowed to cool slowly in open air.

  • The enamel hardens into a glassy, often glossy surface.

5. Finishing

  • The piece may be polished, sanded, or refired to achieve a desired finish.

  • Multiple layers and firings can be applied for depth, color variation, or complex designs.

Types of Enameling Techniques

  • Cloisonné: Metal wires form compartments (cloisons) that are filled with enamel.

  • Champlevé: Enamel is applied into recessed areas carved into the metal.

  • Basse-taille: Translucent enamel applied over engraved metal to enhance depth.

  • Plique-à-jour: Enamel applied in cells without a backing, like stained glass.

  • Torch firing: Small pieces can be fired with a torch instead of a kiln.

Applications

  • Jewelry

  • Decorative art

  • Watch dials

  • Architectural panels

  • Industrial coatings (like on stoves, bathtubs, or signs)
